A lake outside the window, a villa with space for the family, or a location that makes several day trips possible: all three sound appealing. The difficulty is choosing which one matters most. A stay can look perfect online and still be inconvenient if every meal, evening walk or sightseeing plan requires a drive you had not budgeted for.
Start with the holiday you want, then choose the town. This guide compares the three bases as a planning decision, rather than declaring one universally better.
The quickest way to choose
| Your priority | Start your search in | What to check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Spending much of the trip around Naini Lake and the town | Nainital | Actual walking route to the places you want to visit |
| Dividing days between several destinations | Bhowali | Property approach, transport arrangements and daily route |
| Making Bhimtal Lake the focus of the stay | Bhimtal | Whether the property is genuinely close to the lake |
| A larger private space for a group | All three | Layout, bathrooms, capacity and complete price |
These are starting points, not promises about every property in each town. A remote listing with “Nainital” in its name can offer a very different holiday from a stay near the lake.
Choose Nainital when the town is the main attraction
If your ideal day includes time around Naini Lake followed by an evening in town, prioritise accommodation that makes those plans easy. The official tourism portal identifies Nainital as a lake town and a major regional destination. That does not mean every hotel marketed under the name gives convenient access to the centre. Uttarakhand Tourism: Nainital
Before paying, look at the entrance location rather than the map label alone. Ask whether the walk involves steep sections or stairs, where your car will be parked, and how luggage reaches the room. Families travelling with older relatives should treat these as part of the accommodation choice, not as small details to solve after arrival.
For a short stay centred on Nainital, being close to your planned activities can be more valuable than having an extra bedroom elsewhere. Compare the whole day, including transfers, rather than only the nightly rate.
Choose Bhowali when you want a base for different days out
Bhowali is a road junction serving nearby hill destinations, according to the district administration. Its appeal for a multi-stop holiday is therefore practical: you can organise different days around different interests. It is also known for its fruit market. District Nainital: Bhowali
That makes Bhowali worth considering when one person wants a temple visit, another wants lakes, and the group also wants time together at the accommodation. It does not remove the need for transport. Decide whether you will have a car, arrange a driver or book separate transfers before using a lower room price to justify the location.
Ask how far the specific property is from the junction and request the final approach instructions. A town-level location description cannot tell you whether the last section is comfortable for your vehicle or your group.
Choose Bhimtal when the lake is your anchor
Bhimtal offers a different starting point: make its lake your main outing, then decide how much else to add. The state tourism portal includes Bhimtal in the Kumaon lakes circuit. Uttarakhand Tourism: Lakes of Kumaon
Search by the experience you want. “Lake view” and “near the lake” are not interchangeable. Ask which room or terrace has the advertised view, whether the water is visible in current photographs, and how you reach the lakeside from the entrance.
If you plan to leave for Nainital every morning, reconsider whether Bhimtal is the right base. A location is most useful when it supports the holiday you actually take.
Compare the total holiday cost
Build a simple comparison for each shortlisted stay:
- Accommodation total for your actual dates and guest count.
- Taxes, meal charges and any extra-guest or bedding charges.
- Transfers and the number of sightseeing days requiring transport.
- Parking arrangements and cancellation terms.
- The time your group will spend travelling instead of relaxing.
Keep the inclusions equal. An entire villa and two hotel rooms can have very different shared-space arrangements; a breakfast-inclusive quotation should not be compared directly with a room-only rate.
A useful decision for families and groups
Write down your three non-negotiables. They might be minimal stairs, separate bedrooms and easy access to meals. Reject listings that cannot answer those needs clearly, even when the photographs are attractive.
If Bhowali fits your plans, compare the 2BHK villa and 3BHK villa at 3RSTAYS, then ask for a quotation for your dates. Use the existing group-selection guide to organise the layout questions.
The best base is the one that makes your intended holiday easier to enjoy. Choose it by your daily routine, not by the town name alone.
